The Sun Shines on the St. Clair River
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 31, 2012
In the days leading up to the 18th Annual St. Clair River Classic Offshore Powerboat Race, rain was becoming an issue. When the teams started to roll in, the sun came out and showed everyone the “Blue Water” that makes this region famous on the circuit. Being the third stop on the 2012 AMSOIL Offshore Powerboat Series, sanctioned by OPA, St. Clair has always attracted the best of the best to challenge the daunting and notorious Turn 4. With most courses across the country being raced in a counter-clockwise (left turns) direction, St. Clair is traditionally run clockwise (right turns) and when you factor in the seven mile an hour current, Turn 4 plays havoc on every race boat turning back into the oncoming current.

Attention OPA Racers and Fans,
The Smiths Point , Long Island Race has been officially cancelled. While we had permits and approvals from the U.S. Coast Guard, Brookhaven Regatta Permit, Environmental Approvals and a slew of other permits and applications, the Suffolk County Officials reneged on our permit at a meeting that was supposed to be held to go over some small details. Citing traffic worries going to the Park as the reason for their actions, we asked what we could change on our traffic plan to ease their worries and they replied "we haven't read your traffic plan". This is just the tip of the iceberg. One thing I have to say is that our committee solved and dealt with their every whim and more then complied with their needs to hold the race, the County failed at their responsibilities, no one else. On a more positive note or maybe the silver lining to this ordeal is that we have been contacted.

In 2012, OPTIMA® Batteries has partnered with the Golden State Foods Foundation to include a charitable Build-A-Bike program into its street car events to serve children. Many of us can remember customizing our bikes as kids with the coolest decals, chrome cranks or pegs, better grips and seat. This is where we first discovered our passion and the pride we felt after working on our vehicle.
Through the Build-A-Bike program, an OPA VIP Experience package was put up to auction for the St. Clair Michigan event on July 27-29, 2012 in St. Clair, MI.

Where The Heck Is Tawas, Anyway??????
07/07/2012
I am pretty sure that was the first question that popped into most of the racers heads when the event was first being discussed. I know it was my first thought, and I live in Michigan. I doubt it will be a question that is ever raised again, certainly not by anyone who pays attention to offshore racing events.
It’s hard to believe from the outstanding overall success, but this was the inaugural edition of the Heritage Coast Offshore Grand Prix in Tawas Bay, Michigan. The organizers had only a few short weeks to get everything to come together and they must have really burned the midnight oil.

Coming off a very successful 2011 season, the OPA Teams recently converged on the tiny town of Galloway Township NJ to hold their annual meeting and Awards Party. During the pre-party meeting Rick Felson from High Risk Insurance fully explained the coverage limits of the K&K Race Insurance policy that OPA carries at each event and how it offers a unique level of Participant to Participant coverage. Ed Smith, President of OPA followed by explaining some new safety requirements for all canopied boats, such as automatic internal lighting systems and a simple device that will prevent fuel spills through the vent when a boat rolls over. Additionally, OPA will now red flag races whenever there is an incident on the course. Once the course is clear, the race will be restarted. Finally, Smith explained that during the 2012 season OPA will experiment with a Prop Shaft Dyno to control horsepower in the bracket classes and check horsepower in the spec classes.
Promoters hope to return offshore powerboat racing to Jupiter area
02/04/2012
JUPITER — Four dozen powerboats racing up to 180 mph between the Juno Beach Pier and Carlin Park in October is just what the local economy needs, said race promoter Jim Hauser.
“It would be a colorful, incredible event. I figure we could attract 20,000 people,” said Hauser, 65, a Jupiter resident and lifelong boater. The Palm Beach World Championship would be a sanctioned stop for the Offshore Powerboat Association, said Hauser, who retired after 30 years with Mercury Outboard Motors in Wisconsin.
Hauser and Nick Scafidi, owner of Nick’s Creative Marine in Riviera Beach, established Powerboater Palm Beach LLC last year to organize the race.

Remembering Jimmy "Trophy B****" Welsh
December 27, 2012
Love, Thoughts & Prayers for the Welsh Family & Team Typhoon
Jimmy Welsh aka "Trophy B****" was a man that many of us loved & adored. There are so many things and so many stories about this man that we can go on forever and never have a bad thing to say. Jimmy truly had a heart of gold.
Jimmy was big a part of Offshore Racing and was a part of so many people's adventures. He always seemed to be everywhere all the time helping everyone. It is safe to say that no one ever walked away from Jimmy without a smile on their face. You may have walked away shaking your head, but "YES" it was always with a smile and probably a laugh too. Jimmy will be missed greatly by all.
